Cloud Security is serious business

“Biggest threat to a system’s security is virtually always the people using the system.”. It is imperative to empower people with tools that secures and traces cloud transactions.

Curious case of our customer

One our customer recently had his Amazon AWS account hacked. I am reproducing the conversation I had with my customer. I am writing this post with my customer’s permission to help others falling prey to the hackers like one of our customers did.

Mark, client representative recounts, “Online security didn’t bother me too much until I signed up to Amazon AWS, then my problems started. I was amazed when hackers raided my credit card of $600 in charges in just eight hours. I was dumbfounded, how could such devastation occur in just eight hours? This was an account on which I hadn’t even spent any money yet.”

Xervmon Managed Services with a Difference

Every day more and more businesses move their infrastructures to the cloud in order to reap the many benefits it provides; however migration to the cloud can come with it’s own set of challenges. While cloud providers have made the process of migrating to the cloud fairly straightforward, many businesses find it time consuming and costly when it comes to troubleshooting issues.

Rather than wasting valuable time and resources trying to configure your cloud-based infrastructure yourself, why not outsource it to an experienced and professional company offering managed services?

Our approach

Xervmon powers Monitoring management and remediation

While many businesses understand the benefits of migrating their infrastructure and deploying their apps to the cloud, some do not realise that the majority of cloud providers do not actually provide ongoing monitoring, remediation and management services. This leaves businesses with two choices. They can either forgo hiring an engineering team, leaving their developers to monitor and run the infrastructure, which can prove counterproductive. Alternatively they can hire a system engineering team that is able to provide round the clock monitoring and infrastructure support.

Below we have compiled a top ten list to be expanded in the future of best practices we have learned during our aws deployments. We look forward to expanding this list in the future.

Xervmon – Journey so far

Surviving one year in a start-up is a big deal and it does say something about the founders, doesn’t it? The challenges are numerous, including the ability to keep motivated and constantly work to motivate the rest of the team. The founders’ role is to empower and pull the team along, but doing this over the period of two iterations is a rather challenging task.
Let’s look at the Xervmon journey so far, and how it all began. I shall discuss the hiring challenges we have been facing, and what that means for a start-up company, in a different blog.

The inception of Xervmon started in the summer of 2011. I received an email from Rackspace Cloud notifying me that I had an overdue invoice of an astonishing value of $1344.50. I wasn’t content with it, because I barely used their services.

Xervmon – Integrated Cloud Management

The recent Forrester “State of IT Monitoring” study results showed that 14% of participants are using over 20 different tools to find and fix issues. This leads to a number of downfalls, including slow detection of IT problems and prolonged resolution times. Another Forrester Consulting research showed that businesses waste over $100,000/hour due to downtime.

The problem is clear; organizations need one integrated tool to serve all their IT needs. There is a need to change and adopt an integrated system that can help organizations face the challenges of managing and hosting their portals.

Innovations in Systems Integration with Xervmon

Of late, there’s been a lot of noise surrounding the emergence of Cloud Computing as the future of IT and infrastructure development. The problem is clear; organizations need one integrated tool to serve all their IT needs.

The recent Forrester “State of IT Monitoring” study results showed that 14% of participants are using over 20 different tools to find and fix issues. This leads to a number of downfalls, including slow detection of IT problems and prolonged resolution times.

Another Forrester Consulting research, carried out for Zenoss in October 2012, showed that businesses waste over $100,000/hour due to downtime.
There is a need to change and adopt an integrated system that can help organizations face the challenges of managing and hosting their portals.

Xervmon NextGen

We have so far focused on Cloud Cost Management and Spend Analytics for the Public cloud. We stressed on addressing a problem after the fact meaning, customer had already deployed apps on cloud (HP Cloud, Amazon AWS, Rackspace for example). Xervmon tracked the spend, usage metrics and so on. No doubt is it a great tool to have delivered on its promise savings on your spend also validated by several customers. However in typical scenarios we can only go some length in optimizing that.
